Signs You Have Mice, Not Rats, and Why It Matters
The fix for a mouse problem is not identical to the fix for a rat problem. Here is how to tell which one you actually have.
Five Signs Point to Mice, Not Rats
- Droppings are small, about 1/8 to 1/4 inch. Rat droppings, from either species, run noticeably larger, roughly 1/2 to 1 inch.
- Activity is concentrated in a kitchen or pantry. Mice are drawn to stored food indoors more consistently than rats.
- You find gnawed food packaging rather than gnawed wiring or structural wood. Mice chew into food containers directly rather than large structural targets.
- Noise is quiet scurrying inside a wall, not heavy movement overhead at night. The overhead, nighttime pattern points to roof rats instead.
- Activity appeared quickly after new clutter or storage was added. Mice nest in boxes and cluttered storage close to a food source far more readily than rats.
Why the Distinction Actually Changes the Fix
A rat-focused inspection checks quarter-inch gaps at the roofline and foundation. A mouse needs a gap only dime-sized, so a mouse job has to check smaller openings a rat inspection could reasonably miss, particularly around doors, utility lines, and foundation cracks. Can I have both mice and rats at the same time?
Yes, and it is common on properties with both attic access and ground-level gaps. A roof rat in the attic and a house mouse in the kitchen can be present at once.
